Packed up our rigs, waved goodbye to co-travelers and headed north. No tar today! Our first stop is the end of the Alaska Highway in Delta Junction. We stopped at the visitor center and gift shop to swat at mosquitoes, take some photos and get our Alaska Highway certificates. Completion of the Alaska Highway 1442 miles travelled from Dawson Creek’s mile 0.

We continue north to Fairbanks and continue north into thicker and thicker smoke. There are several fires burning south west, East and Northwest of the greater Fairbanks area and the smoke burns our eyes and makes our throats feel raw. John and Vicki put on masks to try and get some relief. I don’t think it helped much. We get to the RV park next to the Fairgrounds and set up camp. It is red squirrel central and Trevor is beside himself. He wants to chase squirrels!

There is a large group here from Anchorage who have taken over one of the small campground loops. They are nice enough but very loud and ignore most of the campground rules including quiet hours. (Remember is doesn’t get dark at night.) At 1:00 a.m. the campground host drives his golf cart over tells them to be quiet and gives them 24 hours to leave. Thank you! Maybe we can all get some sleep now.
